SquareTrade © AP6.0 ajfrank Store NAPOLEON, NELSON AND THEIR TIME / CHRISTIE’S / MAY 1985 Christie's. NAPOLEON, NELSON AND THEIR TIME: THE CALVIN BULLOCK COLLECTION. London: Christie's, 1985. Publisher's glossy pictorial wraps. 4to (over 9¾" - 12" tall). 164, (4) pp. Profusely illustrated with color and B&W photographs. Christie's catalog for Sale No. 3079 ("Napoleon") held in London on May 8, 1985. 402 lots. List of prices realized laid in. This is an unmarked, unopened catalog in perfect, pristine condition. AS NEW. "On the 40th anniversary of VE Day, Christie's commemorated a rather earlier European conflict when memorabilia from the time of Napoleon and Nelson were offered for sale. The collection formed by Calvin Bullock, of NY, was the most important in its field to come on the market in recent memory; and the competition for lots, from the least to the greatest, indicated how strong a hold the period still exerts on many people's imagination. "In sales like this, buyers are acquiring chunks of history as much as works of art, and the Traveling Writing Box of Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte (who reigned as King of Westphalia from 1807 to 1813) was an item [that] combined historical significance with beauty of workmanship and it was [not] surprising that this should exceed its original estimate at . . . $112,914. "Pictures produced the highest prices in the sale, and the amount of interest created was warranted by the importance of some of the works on offer. Horace Vernet's The Bridge at Arcola of 1826 [reproduced in color in the catalog] was as major an example of 19th century military painting as is likely to be on the market for some time. Its almost cinematic appeal produced intense competition and a final price of . . . $398,520." Includes hundreds of additional items of Napoleonic and Nelsonian memorabilia, a total of 402 lots.
