Description
***FIRST AMERICAN EDITION OF ROBERT FROST's MOST IMPORTANT BOOK OF POETRY*** NORTH OF BOSTON BY ROBERT FROST New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1915.  First American Edition, First Printing with "First [English] edition, 1914 / Second edition, 1915" stated on the Copyright Page [See Crane A3.2], and with the poem, "Good Hours" (on page 137) not included in the Table of Contents.  Hardcover with dark gray-blue fine linen cloth lettered and decorated in gold gilt within a thick-thin rule frame on the front cover, and lettered and decorated in gold gilt on the spine.  Measures 5 1/4" by 7 3/4".  137 pages.   Robert Frost's Second Book of Poetry, NORTH OF BOSTON contains 17 of Robert Frost's earliest and best poems, including "The Pasture," "Mending Wall" with its refrain: "Good fences make good neighbors", "The Death of the Hired Man," "Home Burial," "The Black Cottage," "Blueberries," "A Servant to Servants," "After Apple-Picking" and "The Wood-Pile."  While Robert Frost's First Book of Poetry, A BOY'S WILL (1913), brought him some notice as a poet, it was this Second Book of Verse, NORTH OF BOSTON, with its dramatic narrative poems and Frost's "Sound of Sense" theory of poetry that established Robert Frost's reputation as a First-Class Poet, not only in England, but in America as well.  As a result of Robert Frost's growing popularity in the United States, and unable to obtain additional copies of the First English Edition of the book, Henry Holt and Company published 1,300 copies of this First American Edition, First Printing, probably in late March 1915.  The book was so popular and the demand so great, that it went through four additional printings before the end of 1915. Robert Frost (1874-1963) was one of the greatest American Poets of the Twentieth Century who was awarded a record-breaking total of Four Pulitzer Prizes in Poetry for his poems, and who is probably best remembered now for reciting his poem, "The Gift Outright," at the 1961 Inauguration of President John F. Kennedy.  Slight wear to the covers and the spine is slightly faded, else a Near Fine First Printing Copy  in nice, tight, clean and very collectible condition without any previous owners' bookplates or ink inscriptions or marks of any kind, and without the usual bumped & chipped corners, rubbed edges & spine ends, foxing to the endpapers, or darkening to the pages.  This First American Edition Copy is in exceptionally good condition with the gold gilt lettering on the front cover and spine still nice and bright and fresh, and the pages still nice and white and crisp;  it would be hard to find a nicer copy.  Additional pictures are available upon request.  Buyer pays $4.00 Media Mail  OR   $10.00 Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation in the U.S.  Insurance optional but highly recommended.  Foreign buyers should contact me before buying.     Please Note that the shadow or darkness in the picture of the Title Page is a result of my scanner;  the page itself is actually nice and white and crisp.
