Description
"RICHARD PRINCE: NURSE PAINTINGS"Artwork by Richard PrincePublished by Barbara Gladstone Gallery, New York, 2003FIRST EDITION, Second PrintingAmerican painter and photographer Richard Prince has been producing pop culture-inspired art for more than thirty years, often to controversial effect. He is known especially for mixed media collage works combining photography, painting, and other media. His subject matter varies widely, from his earlier re-photographing work, wherein he re-contextualized advertising and fashion imagery, through his "Jokes" paintings, writing jokes on canvases beneath layers of paint, to his later "Hoods" series of paintings on trimmed car hoods. For his "Nurse Paintings" series, Prince scanned the covers of his collection of mid-twentieth-century pulp nurse novels, transferred these images to canvas in large scale via an ink-jet printer, then added layers of acrylic paint to arrive at his finished product. This book was published to coincide with the exhibition at the Gladstone Gallery from September 20 to October 25, 2003, and it features an introduction by Matthew Collings. From a review on Slate.com by Mia Fineman of the exhibition premiere: "Now, with his pictures of nurses, Prince has returned to painting, appropriating a retro subject and rendering it in a retro style—a drippy, brushy, self-consciously painterly version of Abstract Expressionism. Stylistically, the paintings are clever pastiches: The built-up layers and floating blocks of color are winking allusions to Mark Rothko, while the figures of the nurses, their white uniforms swiped and splattered with paint, mimic the gestural fury of Willem de Kooning's women. Their juicy colors and sensuously worked surfaces are unabashedly beautiful and irresistibly appealing. (The paintings in the show sold out before it even opened in New York.)"Interesting thing about the "Edition" of this book. I'm told that when the original Catalogs were delivered to the Gallery for the Show, there was a typo on the Acknowledgment page, which was unacceptable to Mr. Prince, who destroyed all the books, except 26 copies. These 26 copies were SIGNED and LETTERED, and along with any stray typo-ridden copies, make up the "true" first edition. Then there was a Second printing of the Catalogue, which because Mr. Prince designated in an Association copy to an individual as "Second Edition," has now become the Second Edition of this book. The typo is corrected in the Acknowledgments.  These Second Edition copies have evaporated, with many Collectors regarding them as the First Edition, Second Printing, and the 26 Lettered copies as the First Limited Edition. So when we say First Edition, we are actually saying the second printing of the First Edition.  I hope that is clear.VERY FINE, scarce FIRST EDITION (Second Printing). Richard Prince: Nurse Paintings is a softcover book with pictorial wrappers, measuring 10 x 7.5 inches and containing 30 color reproductions in 80 pages. Top Choice Books offers this very rare Prince catalog in very fine condition for the collector and fan alike.PAYMENT DETAILS   Please use the shipping calculator to determine your shipping costs for US addresses   International shipping is available   I will only accept PayPal, personal checks, and money orders (bank, post office).  Payment MUST be received within three business days of the purchase, or the item will be re-listed unless other arrangements have been approved.
