Description
NOTE: EBAY IS NOW FORCING SELLERS TO INSERT A SHIPPING CHARGE. BECAUSE THIS CHARGE VARIES SO MUCH, I MUST ADD A HIGH ENOUGH CHARGE TO COVER ALL AREAS EXCEPT OVERSEAS. HOWEVER, THE TRUE CHARGE WILL BE DETEMINED IN A WINNING BIDDERS INVOICE. Here now, some good news for MG TD and TF owners. I have commissioned a few axle shafts to be made from high-duty material with other improvements incorporated. The result is certainly a much more reliable axle than the original one. NOTE: I NOW SUPPLY A 7/8-14 SELF-LOCKING NUT WITH THE AXLE. The photo shows you how your original axle looks (top) and the decided difference that this remarkable axle has (bottom). And here are the details of this excellent upgraded axle: The material and hardness specifications for you metallurgists out there are as follows: Old Material: 1340; New material: 1541. Heat treating is by high-temperature induction. The shaft was originally surface-hardened to #50 ~ #55, whereas it is now done to #62 (which penetrates further–to about 1/3 of the diameter). Also, the factory shaft was 15/16” in diameter from the splines at the end that fits into the differential is now reduced to 7/8” from there to where it tapers upward to the axle bearing stop surface. This makes that area a good deal more resistant to failure, as it provides more twisting with the strain of starting out or snapping the clutch, thus reducing that breaking-off malady in the typical spot at the end of those splines. Because breaking an axle has been a steady problem for over 55 years, I decided to see what I could do to try to assist TD, TF, and YB owners by eliminating that fragile factory axle and getting this extra-duty shaft made by a company that has produced axles for many, many decades. The cost has been pretty high, but I can still pass along some substantial savings and open the auction with a starting bid WELL BELOW any supplier that sells them among their commercial wares (I’ve seen $189.95 and $191.85 per each), and with NO RESERVE. I don’t think any of you who travel a lot in your TD, TF, or YB should be without a spare axle shaft aboard (if fits neatly into the side curtain compartment or in the Y boot). And here’s an opportunity to lessen the chance you will get another factory-type shaft–when you really need one–and at a price well below the other standard axles that are offered. NOTE TO OVERSEAS BIDDERS: OUR POSTAL SERVICE HAS INCREASED OVERSEAS RATES TO LESS THAN REASONABLE RATES. IF YOU WISH TO BID, BE PREPARED TO PAY THISE CHARGES. THE WEIGHT OF THIS AXLE IS 7 lb. YOU CAN GO TO http://postcalc.usps.gov/ TO GET THE RATES FOR YOUR CITY OR COUNTRY. If this item is not as described, I will refund the bid, plus postage both ways. Buyer to pay only actual postage. Please see my other auctions for more and sometimes unusual items of interest. P.S. I have just completed an inventory of my extensive stock of BMC and LUCAS new old stock and good used parts. If you have a need for a particular item and you have either the factory number or the Moss number (Lucas number only or a complete description), I will be happy to respond to you with an answer. Use my e-mail address: jdaustinmg@dslextreme.com. By the way, I am attempting to gather information in a data base for pre-1956 MGs. I am doing so as a sort of historical project in case a previous or subsequent owner wants to know if there is information regarding his or her car(s). My data include Owner and City, state/country, Year, Car #, Engine #, Owner Name, Date of acquisition (Appr.), Previous owner info, Colors, and any Substantial modifications. This list is not for publication and will be used only for historic information. It will not be circulated. Please pass along any info you or your friends have. Just click on Ask Seller a Question and send me the statistics. Thanks.
