Description
A rare one from the shelves........ PHILIP LARKIN (1922 - 1985) Philip Larkin talks to Eboracum First Edition of this 4pp. booklet issued in an edition of 'about twenty copies'. 16mo. Stapled, as issued. Sewn into an A5 size booklet bound in wrappers, printed on the upper panel, as issued. One of 18 copies thus. Published by Eboracum [York 1970] and [Privately Printed] London 1982. 'Both' are fine copies. An extraordinarily rare item. 'In 1979 Faber and Faber published 'Philip Larkin: A Bibliography 1933-1976, by B.C. Bloomfield. In the introduction to section 'E' of the Bibliography, 'Interviews', Bloomfield writes: "Larkin at one time granted interviews fairly readily and the reports by the interviewers are often the surest way of ascertaining his opinions on various topics at those times." Entry E12 in this section is listed as 'Philip Larkin talks to Eboracum. Eboracum [Derwent College, University of York], 10 [(Christmas 1971)], pp. 9 and 16.' The writer of this note was the publisher of Eboracum at that time (as well, perforce, as editor and business manager). The magazine bears no date, but Bloomfield is in error dating it as 1971. It in fact appeared at Christmas 1970. References to Christmas are found in the advertisements, whilst the copies sent to Larkin were received by him in January 1971, probably thus being given the date stamp of that year either in his personal files or in those of the Brynmor Jones Libary at the University of Hull. Bloomfield also omits to note that a few copies of the 'interview' were run off as a 16mo booklet, and presumably, therefore, had failed to locate the Larkin copy. About twenty copies of this booklet were printed from the re-formatted standing type of the magazine in November 1970, for the editor's private use, it being his intention to send them to his friends as 'Christmas cards'. As an act of courtesy to Larkin, however, a copy of the booklet was sent to him, in order to obtain his response, before it was distributed. Larkin failed to acknowledge its receipt, and the booklet, with the exception of the Larkin copy and perhaps one or two others, never was sent out. Eighteen surviving copies of the booklet were re-discovered in February 1982 amongst the detritus of the editorial files. Since the events leading up to the publication of this 'interview' were such as both to cast doubt on Bloomfield's statement that "Larkin at one time granted interviews fairly readily", and also to modify critical apprehension as to the value of what such interviews contain, it has been thought possibly of interest to issue them now, together with a word or two of explanation and the appended facsimilies, in order to preserve some record of what actually occured.' - from the introduction. The facsimiles referred to are five letters from Larkin. Later on during the introduction it states that rather than being an interview this was actually written by Larkin '...and about three weeks later I received his typescript, together with a covering letter....'. Unless agreed in advance kindly note that all payments must be made in UK sterling. I am happy for payment to be made by Paypal (including eCheques, but please note that these usually take around ten days to clear), cheques drawn on a U.K. bank or U.K. postal orders. Other methods may be possible but please contact me first. Rates are shown at the bottom of this page. Click on your country from the drop down list. I'm very happy to combine purchases with a view to saving postage charges - please ask. United Kingdom Within the U.K. my books are always fully insured (WHICH MEANS that if the parcel fails to arrive you will get ALL your money back from me, saving you the considerable hassle of dealing with Royal Mail). Except for heavy books or several books in a parcel I always use Recorded Delivery. For books over £36.00 in value I use Special Delivery Next Day or Standard Parcel (with enhanced compensation) if over 2kg. total weight. In cases where the total weight exceeds 1kg. I use Standard Parcel instead of 2nd Class Recorded as this is not available over this weight. All Other Destinations In addition to the rates shown I can offer an International Signed For* service with Surface Mail parcels costing £3.50 for books up to a value of £36.00, and £5.70 for books with a value above this. Surface mail is slow: parcels can arrive in four weeks but please allow at least eight for delivery. In some cases with more valuable books I will send by surface mail only in conjunction with the Signed For service. For parcels sent by Airmail I can offer an Airsure* service where parcels receive priority handling and are electronically tracked. This service costs £4.20 for books up to a value of £36.00, and £6.40 for books with a value above this. *Unless either the Airsure or Signed For service is chosen I regret that I cannot be held responsible for a parcel not arriving, but I always obtain a Certificate of Posting and will give you all the help I can to make your claim. Some good news: in very many years of posting overseas I have had only two parcels not arrive. In some listings where the value of the book is high you will find that the *Airsure service is the only option. I will refund you in full in the case of non delivery. *When Airsure is not yet available to a particular country I will use International Signed For. Any book may be returned within seven days of receipt for a full refund if found to be other than as described. Distance Selling Regulations provide a period of seven working days after the date of receipt within which the buyer can cancel the contract. If you wish to return a book because of a change of mind please inform me within this time and post the book back immediately. Please note that the cost of returning the book, in its original conditon please and using my packaging, will be for the buyer to pay. My refund will be made immediately upon safe receipt. Distance Selling Regulations apply to items purchased via Buy It Now listings and Second Chance Offers. They do not apply to books bought via the auction method. Please Bid or Buy With Confidence. I use copious amounts of packaging to try to ensure that books reach you undamaged and I never use padded envelopes (or, come to that, old cornflake packets etc. etc.). I aim to offer the sort of service that I like to receive. If you would like any further information please contact me. ***Thank you for your interest*** Any correspondence (and cheques!) should be addressed to Eliot Lewis, Kelmscott, 24 Eden Vale Road, Westbury, Wiltshire BA13 3NZ.
