Binding:   HardcoverBook Condition:   Near Fine/No Jacket as issued. Edition:   First EditionPublisher:   San Francisco Whitton, Towne and Co. 1853Seller ID:   INTERLOC022860 16mo, 189pp., Gilt lettered spine. Tiny amount of fraying at spine ends. Mild foxing on some pages. Former owner signature dated 1907. Original brown cloth, gilt-lettered spine. First edition of the first book printed in California on Hawaii. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author and given to Jane L. Hardy, a member of the church Hunt was Pastor of. Timothy Dwight Hunt [1821-1895] was a missionary in Hawaii who delivered a series of popular lectures on the Islands in San Francisco in 1852-3. Hunt arrived in San Francisco from Hawaii in 1848 to serve as chaplain to the American community and provide the first Protestant worship. When in 18 49, agents of other denominations organized separate churches, Hunt gathered the First Congregational Church. From eight charter members, the church grew to be for many decades the premier pulpit in the city, and to endure as a caring community. Apparently only 500 copies of this book were issued. Likely most of these eventually ended up in libraries as we have seldom seen copies without the library marks. We have never seen a copy as nice as this in the original binding. Likely the best obtainable copy of this scarce book. Forbes 1946; Greenwood, California Imprints 388.
