Description
CHRISTIE'S AUCTION CATALOGUE - PRINCESS DIANA DRESSES -  LIMITED EDITION Description This is the 1st edition softcover auction catalogue from the sale of Diana's Dresses at Christie's in London and New York in June 1997, a month before her untimely death.   The Catalogue itself contains details of the 80 amazing dresses over 212 pages that were sold at the highly successful Christies Auction, with stunning photographs of Princess Diana, predominantly in color, plus descriptions. There are also sketches included from the Designers who became famous for the creations they made for the Princess.  Each dress describes the designer, the exquisite designs and fabrics. Where the dress was worn is also mentioned in some lots. Condition This particular copy has been well kept – in mint condition, with no rips, tears, marks, etc.  This book has been kept in a box and away from sunlight at all times.  It also comes from a smoke and pet free home. Value If you are a Princess Diana collector this would be a valuable addition to your collection.  The Catalogue is a remarkable "history" in itself, of Diana's amazing style, glamour and beauty - and changing tastes over her 16 years in the public arena.  This is a great historical book on Diana's Dresses. There were only a limited number published for the auction in 1997, and they will never be published again. Here is your chance to own a piece of history. New York Times  Article on “Dresses” the catalogue One Christie's official describes them as ''a walk amongst the sequins,'' so detailed are the photographs of 80 dresses from the closet of Diana, Princess of Wales, to be auctioned for charity on June 25, 1997 at Christie's on Park Avenue. The sales catalogue, titled ''Dresses,'' resembles more a coffee table fashion book than the marketing tool it is, with 250 pages dedicated to designer sketches and photos of the Princess clad in gowns she wore for state occasions and royal portraits. Meredith Etherington-Smith, a former fashion magazine editor who is now Christie's group creative marketing director, called it ''a visual history of being a princess.'' ''Dresses,'' the catalogue and the sale, benefit some of Diana's favorite charities, among them the Royal Marsden Hospital Cancer Fund and the AIDS Crisis Trust in London, as well as the Harvard AIDS Institute and the Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. For their money, buyers get a cover photo taken for the catalogue by Lord Snowdon, the Princess's former husband's former uncle by marriage. In it she wears Lot 80, a beaded dress of oyster-colored duchesse satin by Victor Edelstein, which she wore to a 1988 banquet given by President Francois Mitterrand. The 79 other outfits, also by British designers, include a strapless sheath gown and jacket of ivory silk crepe worn on a state visit to Asia and designed by Catherine Walker; a lilac silk crepe dress by Ms. Walker, with beaded over-bodice and sleeveless top of ice-blue satin, which the Princess wore in Korea five years ago, and an ink-blue silk-velvet gown by Mr. Edelstein for a dinner given by President Ronald Reagan in 1985. With their thick paper, glossy photographs and focus on the person at the heart of the sale, these new celebrity catalogues are being positioned as coffeetable books, designed to play to the voyeuristic proclivity to peek into the private lives of the rich and famous. ''Life-style catalogues,'' Mrs. Brooks called them. ''Like a coffeetable book, catalogues are something fun to have,'' Mrs. Brooks said. ''Which to me is what it's all about.''
