Exhibiting all the direct & principal cross roads, cities, towns, and most considerable villages, parks, rivers, navigable canals &c. preceded by a general map of South Britain, shewing the connexion of one map with another, also a general description of each County, and directions for the junction of the roads from one County to another.  By John Carey. London: Printed for John Carey, 1787. 1st Edition. [2] Note/Advertisment, title page, dedication page, 17 pages at rear titled, “Directions for The Junction of the Roads of England and Wales”. Interior remains tight, clean and complete. Pages with some toning remain better than average. Some edge wear to the first few and last few pages. No text loss. Several maps with thin red lines under some towns. It appears to be watercolor but we are not sure. The same underlining appears several times in the text as well. Nothing vulgar. We would suggest that this was done during the period. Surely not within the last 100 or so years. The corners are rather bumped and rounded. Both front and rear joints with some rubbing. 5 raised bands at spine remain. Title at spine remains. Some minor wear to the head and toe of spine.  FO note to inside front board. Good +. In his influence on the cartography of Great Britain Cary may be ranked with Saxton and with Ogilby, and in one respect he had an advantage over them Cary was himself an engraver The maps of Cary are usually marked by the excellence of their workmanship as well as by a standard of accuracy far in advance of that attained in England before his time; he probably deserves the high praise bestowed on him by Sir George Fordham, as being the founder of the modern English school of cartography."
