Description
Happy bidding, happy reading! One of the most beautiful books in existence, in our opinion, both as a literary work and as an illustrated work. A personal favourite. Only 750 copies were ever issued of this Deluxe limited edition of Edmund Dulac's illustrated version of  The Bells and Poems by Edgar Allan Poe. This book was issued in 1912, almost 100 years old. Moving and beautiful illustrations, in colour and duotone, extensively and profusely illustrated - the epitome of Golden Age and Art Nouveau illustration. A stunning, extensively gilt vellum binding, one of the most elaborate bindings - if not the most elaborate vellum binding of all of early Hodder and Stoughton limited editions. Book: The Bells and Other Poems, by Edgar Allan Poe, with illustrations By Edmund Dulac. HODDER & STOUGHTON, LONDON, no date but circa 1912. Deluxe First Edition, limited to 750 copies only and signed by Edmund Dulac on limitation page. Publisher's original full vellum, very extensively and elaborately gilt cover and spine, decorated with bells and ornaments. Impressive thick volume, book, 28cm X 24cm X 5cm approximately, large quarto. Twenty-eight stunning tipped-in plates on  bordered mounts, all under captioned tissue guards. Many additional duotone drawings. Contents on thick, textured English handmade paper, similar to Arches or Fabriano and watercolour art papers. Top Edge Gilt, others uncut. Later gold silk ties. Book Condition:  A very lovely copy. Externally, very minor bowing and minor soiling to boards. Slight and minor wear and soiling to extremities of binding. The top gilt edge bright and very  nice. Endpapers darkened and transferred as is typical. Internally FINE. Light transferring of deep black inks from the duotone illustrations to pages opposite, as is typical of all early Hodder and Stoughton limited fine-bound editions. No bookplates or inscriptions. Complete with the original invitation to the exhibition of Drawings and Watercolours for this book.  The beautiful chromolithographic colour plates after Edmund Dulac's brilliant watercolours are a pleasure to peruse. One of the most beautiful books we have ever had the pleasure to own, a highlight of any collection. Good luck and enjoy your win!   SHIPPING: We are happy to ship worldwide. Within UK 24HR :  £ 18.50 (insured, recorded, well boxed to arrive safely.) All our good books are shipped in boxes and well wrapped.   USA, CANADA, Europe, Japan, Hong Kong, China, Australia, other destinations, we will ship AT COST via courier ( due to weight) or by other methods stated above as agreed with the high bidder.   CONDITIONS OF SALE: PAYMENT: Payment by Paypal, UK check/money order to our UK address, EURO check to our UK address, US/CDN check/money order to our North American address. We do our best to accurately describe the age, origin, manfacturer and all attributes of each and every object, however this remains our informed opinion and subject of our reserach not a guarantee or a warranty. We provide the best photographs that we can and to describe the object in detail including any faults or defects could affect value or use. Please note however that many of  our items are antiques and vintages, over 100 years old, sometimes much older. Please satisfy yourself as to the item prior to auction end.
