Description
"RECONNAISSANCE WALES" – First Limited Edition of 1,000 CopiesPhotography by Josef KoudelkaPublished by Ffotogallery, Cardiff, Wales, 1998Josef Koudelka is one of the most well known European photographers, largely for his amazing images of the Prague Spring of 1968, which were smuggled out of Czechoslovakia and published around the world. The photographer has continued to not shy away from difficult subjects, focusing on the isolation of modern man, the landscape of the ruined coal country on the Germany/Czech border, and the difficult lives lived by the strong culture of gypsies in Europe. In Reconnaissance Wales, Koudelka focuses on Wales, in equal measures on the natural beauty and the man-made environment, in the form of panoramic images. From the publisher: "The stark, brooding, exquisitely composed pictures are not simply concerned with describing specific places, but talk equally about terrain: the actual substance of the earth, the physical presence of man-made structures, the interface between the land, the sea and the air. In this respect the images from South Wales that make up 'Reconnaissance,' while having a remarkable sensibility towards a sense of place, do not subscribe to the conventional wisdoms of landscape photography."VERY FINE/NEW, LIMITED FIRST EDITION of 1,000 Copies. VERY SCARCE. This very special book of Josef Koudelka's Wales images was limited to an edition of 1,000 copies and features a handmade binding in addition to a unique presentation of these panoramic images—all sixteen duotone plates are printed on a single accordion-fold sheet (listed as 48 pages), which fits inside a cardboard hardcover (9.25 x 11.25 inches), stamped in black with "Koudelka, Reconnaissance, Wales." The book, published in association with Cardiff Bay Arts Trust, National Galleries and Museums of Wales, and Magnum Photos, also includes a preface by Christopher Coppock and an introduction by Derrick Prince. Top Choice Books offers very fine/new (slight flaking of black ribbon) copies of this unique and rare Koudelka publication.PAYMENT DETAILS   Please use the shipping calculator to determine your shipping costs for US addresses   International shipping is available   I will only accept PayPal, personal checks, and money orders (bank, post office).  Payment MUST be received within three business days of the purchase, or the item will be re-listed unless other arrangements have been approved.
