TITLE: The Acropolis PUBLISHER: The Associated Student Body of Whittier College, Whittier, CA DATE: 1934 DESCRIPTION: Extremely rare, Whittier College yearbook, The Acropolis, published in 1934, Nixon's senior year. A young, 21 year old, Richard Nixon, President of the Associated Student Body of Whittier College, is prominently featured under "Student Government" in a full page photograph and write up on page 36. It reads: "Richard Nixon, President A.S.W.C., After one of the most successful years the college has ever witnessed, we stop to reminisce, and come to the realization that much of the success was due to the efforts of this very gentleman. Always progressive, and with a liberal attitude, he has led us through the year with flying colors." Nixon also appears in five other places throughout the annual: Cap & gown photo on page 55, Orthogonian Society photo on page 91 (Nixon co-founded this fraternal organization as a freshman in 1930), Varsity Squad Football team picture on page 117 (Nixon is #23), college play photograph on page 161, and Forensics Debate Squad photograph and write up on page 167. The yearbook is bound in half-cloth with black paper covered boards, Acropolis printed in black over the white cloth, dimensions 12 1/4" X 9 1/4", 213 pages. Richard Nixon, the 37th President of the United States, was born on January 9, 1913 in Yorba Linda, California into a modest Quaker family. He spent his youth working hard and studying. Nixon graduated summa cum laude from Whittier College in 1934, with a bachelor's degree in history, then went on to Duke University Law School in North Carolina where he graduated third in his class in 1937. He returned to Whittier where he worked as a lawyer for five years before joining the Navy in August 1942. Whittier College, founded in 1887, is a four-year liberal arts college located in Whittier, California. The college was named in honor of Quaker poet and abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier, who died in 1892 without ever having seen the college. CONDITION: This yearbook is in near fine condition. There is a 7/8" round tape residue mark on front top right corner. (see photo) There are a few light scratches on the front cover and very light corner bumping. Page 213 contains five women's signatures written neatly in ink, four with addresses. Published by the Associated Student Body of which Richard Nixon was president, the Whittier College 1934 campus yearbook, The Acropolis is a high quality, well designed publication.
