Description
RICHARD WRIGHT, NATIVE SON, TRUE FIRST, SIGNED, IN ARTIST'S BOX Richard Wright, Native Son, Harper & Brothers, 1940, First Edition stated. First Binding in dark blue cloth, stamped in red and grey. With First State (yellow and green) dust-jacket. There is a later printing in a yellow and green dust-jacket, but it has been altered so that the type does not run under the title. This is the first state, matching the FEL edition. The book is very good to near fine with only slight rubbing to upper right of cover, slight bumping to spine ends and the tiniest bit of foxing to end-papers (see photos). The dust-jacket is only fair, with chips missing to spine bottom and top and cover tips (see photos). Rick has backed up the dust-jacket with a scan in which he replaced the missing pieces, and in it's mylar, it looks very nice. The price is still intact. This copy has a lovely bold inscription by Wright dated in the year of it's publication (see photos). This is combined with a fine/fine copy of the second state of the first edition in a price clipped dust-jacket. Both are in a Custom wood slipcase made from an old box with "MADE IN AMERICA" stenciled on. Rick thinks it is old Douglas Fir, and he has used one of the knot holes to highlight and expose the painting of Bigger Thomas on the second state dust-wrapper. Wright left America in 1946 and died in 1960, so there are not many signed copies of his work. The first state book without a signature is going for $6,000 these days, so this is quite the bargain for the Wright Person out there. This volume will be accompanied by a signed letter from the artist. He has signed the bottom of the box. The book will be carefully packaged in a cardboard box and shipped USPS, Priority Mail, Insured. Thanks. Rick Tuttle is a painter, writer, graphic designer, carpenter, bookbinder and lover of literature who combines his many interests in the creation of one of a kind works of art that merge the written word with fine leather, paper, paint, wood and veneer. The Chicago Tribune has said, "Seeing Tuttle’s work gives one a new appreciation of the power of literature to inspire creativity. The ways in which he has been moved by words would make any author proud." Creative, whimsical, insightful, heavy, excitable – from a copy of "Animal Farm" bound in pigskin; to "On the Road with a tire tread deeply embossed in black leather; a copy of Homer's Odyssey with waves in the boards and a little wooden boat; to a first edition of "Tarzan of the Apes" housed in a tree trunk; two firsts of Di Donato's "Christ in Concrete" in a cement slipcase – his work inspires, awes and leaves you amused, wondering why these books haven't always been presented like this. These are works of art meant to take books off the shelf, making them the visual centerpiece of a home or library.See more of his work at www.ricktuttle.com. Motivated by Marcel Duchamp’s attempts to elevate the object into art and William Blake’s efforts to remake his world and James Joyce’s efforts to include all culture and all action in one whole: Motivated by the ongoing conversation of Jazz musicians between its earliest practitioners and its most avant garde practitioners: Motivated by the great world library of ‘what we are’ as extolled by Jorge Luis Borges: Motivated by the desire to live in a world that is conscious of itself and conscious of its ability to create itself: I create these art objects out of books in order be surrounded by a physical environment that reflects the world of ideas I want to live in.–Rick Tuttle
