Original Phillis Wheatley Poem "On Recollection" printed in 1773!! This is an extremely rare find!  It is an original poem by Phillis Wheatley that was printed in the 1773 issue of The Gentleman's Magazine!  The poem appears on page 456 and has a footnote that indicates it is "taken from a small volume of Poems on Various Subjects, just published, written by PHILLIS WHEATLEY, a negro of Boston, who was brought from Africa in 1761, and is now only in the twenty-first year of her age."  It is a truly moving poem that does well to describe the heartache of a young girl brought from Africa in 1761 into slavery.  This rare original 1773 printing is an honor to own! The footnote eloquently states: "Youth, innocence, and piety, united with genius, have not yet been able to restore her to the condition and character with which she was invested by the Great Author of her being.  So powerful is custom in rendering the heart insensible to the rights of nature, and the claims of excellence!" Many of the other pages are missing from this magazine. You are basically bidding on the rare poem by Phillis Wheatley. It is in very good condition expecially for its age!
