Rauschenberg had a career as a photographer before embarking on a fine art career centering on drawing and painting. His best photographic work recalls that of Walker Evans, Lee Friedlander, and Garry Winogrand. This monograph was published in conjunction with an exhibit of his photographs at the Centre Beaubourg in Paris and contains 5 montages created especially for this publication in January 1981. From the publisher: The book is divided into two parts. The first is a series of photographs taken in 1945-1946, ranging from Tangiers to Rome, from New York to North Carolina.
