Robin Collyer sculpture is everything we expect a public monument to be: an ideological representation that speaks symbolically to its public. Only now, the images and ideals a society offers itself are realized in a monument that articulates what is disenfranchised from those very representations. Collyer's sculptures combine readymade industrial and commercial materials with the photography and printed matter of advertising, packing, newspapers and magazines. These constructions create a resemblance to actual things in the world onto which images and signs are hung, as if the sculpture were a decorated shed - such as a storefront, advertising kiosk, newsbox, or money machine. These resemblances provide the reality missing in the media images' original deliverance. The full complexity of that reality, however, is manifest only thorough the ability of the sculpture's resemblance to change its own context and meaning and to call forth other images and concrete situations that ground the media images in differing social conditions. Collyer's sculpture is a sustained commentary and architecture and urban planning and on the commodification of our lived experience as evidenced in the built environment around us or in the media images that bombard us.
