Back in 1964 when this novel was first published/released Wilbur signed a few copies including his middle initial, "A," which is short for Addison. As you will notice, the middle initial is also included on the dust jacket of the book. Well, when his second novel, DARK OF THE SUN (TRAIN FROM KATANGA in the USA), his publishers dropped his middle initial, and he also stopped signing books where the "A" was included. Why such a high price for this copy? Wilbur rarely signed books prior to 1993 when RIVER GOD was published and he reached a fan base much larger than he had ever reached before. So, to find a signed copy of WHEN THE LION FEEDS is a rare opportunity. But, a copy that was signed back in 1964 is even more difficult to come by. And, to top it off, to find a copy that includes his middle initial is the Holy Grail. I have been seriously collecting Wilbur Smith books for over a decade and specialize in his works and their bibliographic details. In the decade I have been collecting, I have only seen 5 or 6 copies of WHEN THE LION FEEDS come up for sale where the middle initial "A" is included in the signature. I currently own two such copies, and have sold two others, so 4 of the 5 or 6 have passed through my hands. This is how I can attest to the scarcity of this item. This copy is represented by the photos below. For nearly one-of-a-kind items, condition is not as important as for items that are more common and available.
