Description
"SPIRITUAL AMERICA"Photography by Richard PrincePublished by IVAM/Centre del Carne, Valencia, 1989Some dismiss popular culture as fluff and ephemera, full of sound and fury and signifying nothing. Richard Prince rejects that idea outright, as nothing, to him, seems more telling a reflection of society than its popular culture. In this collection, Prince reveals that our reality has become so many layers removed that it is difficult to know what anything means anymore. His is the study of semiotics. What are all these things we value? Is there any true meaning in them, or only what we assign (or is assigned for us)? Price appropriates common and familiar images – commercials, cereal boxes, the hood of a muscle car, even jokes and cartoons -  and re-contextualizes them to reveal to us our own trends and national obsessions. Roberta Price of the New York Times notes: "Mr. Prince's ancestors include Duchamp, Jasper Johns and especially Andy Warhol. But unlike Warhol, he is much less interested in the stars than in the audience. Thus he is just as much an heir to Walker Evans and Carson McCullers, with their awareness of the common person."VERY FINE, SCARCE.
