The "Harcourt & Brace" edition with "copyright 1943" is mass-market edition first issued in late 1950s. TRUE first edition was  published by "Reynal & Hitchcock" . While "Reynal & Hitchcock" copies are scarce and highly collectible, "Harcourt & Brace" copies are mass-production.April 6th,  is a Birthday of "Little Prince". The world-wide first edition was presented on this day in 1943, so "Little Prince" had his 65th Anniversary this years. The original French edition was first published in 1946,  almost three years later after appearance of this Katherine Woods' translation.  THE LITTLE PRINCE, by Antoine De Saint-Exupery, RARE TRUE first edition, first state with colophon on page 94, published by Reynal & Hitchcock, New York, 1943. Points of true first edition: "Reynal & Hitchock" is imprinted on spine, title page and copyright page; color flower on page 27; colophon on page 94.  Printing is not stated, which is the point of the first printing.  Original first state unclipped dust jacket with "386 Fourth Avenue, New York" address. (DJ has some soiling, creases and wear). DJ is protected by the mylar cover.     Original pictorial hard cover; maroon cloth (a little soiling), 7.1/4" x 9", many b/w and color illustrations by the author, 93 pages + colophon; inscription on the front endpaper, no creases, very nice copy.  Very scarce true 1st/1st, especially in such very good condition. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry first published The Little Prince in 1943, only a year before his Lockheed P-38 vanished over the Mediterranean during a reconnaissance mission. More than a half century later, this fable of love and loneliness has lost none of its power. The narrator is a downed pilot in the Sahara Desert, frantically trying to repair his wrecked plane. His efforts are interrupted one day by the apparition of a little, well, prince, who asks him to draw a sheep. "In the face of an overpowering mystery, you don't dare disobey," the narrator recalls. "Absurd as it seemed, a thousand miles from all inhabited regions and in danger of death, I took a scrap of paper and a pen out of my pocket." And so begins their dialog, which stretches the narrator's imagination in all sorts of surprising, childlike directions. The Little Prince describes his journey from planet to planet, each tiny world populated by a single adult. It's a wonderfully inventive sequence, which evokes not only the great fairy tales but also such monuments of postmodern whimsy as Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities. And despite his tone of gentle bemusement, Saint-Exupéry pulls off some fine satiric touches, too. There's the king, for example, who commands the Little Prince to function as a one-man (or one-boy) judiciary: I have good reason to believe that there is an old rat living somewhere on my planet. I hear him at night. You could judge that old rat. From time to time you will condemn him to death. That way his life will depend on your justice. But you'll pardon him each time for economy's sake. There's only one rat. The author pokes similar fun at a businessman, a geographer, and a lamplighter, all of whom signify some futile aspect of adult existence. Yet his tale is ultimately a tender one--a heartfelt exposition of sadness and solitude, which never turns into Peter Pan-style treacle. Such delicacy of tone can present real headaches for a translator, and in her 1943 translation, Katherine Woods sometimes wandered off the mark, giving the text a slightly wooden or didactic accent. Saint-Exupéry's drawings offer a handy rebuttal: they're fresh, funny, and like the book itself, rigorously truthful. An extremely popular book, both in French and in English, first editions are becoming increasingly difficult to find. The book is known for it's wonderful story line as well as for the charming illustrations throughout. "The Little Prince lived alone on a tiny planet no larger than a house. He possessed three volcanoes, two active and one extinct, although one never knows about volcanoes. He also owned a flower, unlike any flower in all the galaxy, of great beauty and of inordinate pride. It was this pride that ruined the serenity of the Little Prince's world and started him on the travels that brought him at last to the Earth where he learned finally, from a fox, the secret of what is really important in life. "To preserve his memory of the Little Prince, Saint-Exupery has made some forty watercolors, whimsical, gravely meticulous in detail. Each is an almost essential part of the story..There are a few stories which in some way, in some degree, change the world forever for their readers. This is one."  SCARCE & NICE COLLECTIBLE COPY. The published form of a literary work. 2. The number of copies, as of a book or newspaper, printed at one time or at several times from plates substantially UNALTERED. Only the print from the SUBSTANTIALLY ALTERED PLATES indicates a new edition. PRINTING: One run during the production of a book. In many cases single prints are indicated by the date of printing on the title page. The modern books have a bar-code on the copyright page indicating the printing ("1" is present in bar-code) or "A" or stated "first printing"). For example all later printings of a First Edition are still a "First Edition". STATE: Small changes in the plates, like correcting the errors, broken types or taking out an illustration during the printing process, result in small differences. Different states can be still parts of one printing. Normally the early states have a very high catalog value. ISSUE: The amount of produced books, or newspaper, etc. during one edition or printing. CONTACT Back to Top If you prefer to send payment via mail, Please contact me within three days of auctions close. If you e-mail me about an item, please include always the item number. RETURN POLICY Back to Top If you are not happy with the merchandise, contact me immediately by e-mail to see how we can resolve the deal to our mutual satisfaction before leaving neutral or negative feedback. I will be as fair as I can, but will not issue refunds for buyers remorse or errors in bidding. I will do my best to accurately describe lots for sale, but on occasion I make mistakes or simply can't explain every detail of the item due to time constrains. If you have any questions, ask them before placing a bid and I will reply promptly. NON-PAYMENT POLICY Back to Top NON-PAYING BIDDERS: Because of the costs involved with listing on ebay, I cannot tolerate Non-Paying Bidders. PLEASE REMEMBER: As outlined by eBay, your bid is a contract. Place a bid only if you are serious about buying the item. If you are the winning bidder, you will enter into a legally binding contract to purchase the item from the seller. You should contact the seller to resolve any question before bidding. I pay eBay to list and sell my items, it is unfair to the seller when buyers do not complete the transaction. Payment should be postmarked within 10 days after auction has closed (international customers 14 days if send by mail). If payment is not received within this time period or if no other payment agreement is made, you will be notified by Ebay (NON-PAYING ALERT). If it becomes necessary for me to request a refund of fees from Ebay for any reason, there is a risk for the non-paying bidder of suspension or expulsion after 3 such offenses. Please keep this in mind, since prompt payment insures that both parties will be happy while maintaining the good will and integrity most people have come to expect from Ebay.
