As you read every word of this report you will see that is exactly what this listing offers you, and with the opportunity to name your price! The buy it now is there to show what we think this book would easily get at a brick and mortar auction house or bookshop. There are other books from Mark Twain's library on the market for $30,000 that we don't think are as important as this one. And even mass produced copies of Twain's first editions are commonly priced way above $17,500, including first editions of Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer , and the Jumping Frog . This is a unique opportunity to acquire a very special item that is guaranteed to be authentic . The several Anti-Slavery tracts in this book were made around the time Samuel Clemens was born in the 1830's, while Slavery was alive and well. The Clemens family owned slaves and used the Bible to preach the justification of it. Slavery surrounded Sam Clemens during his boyhood days in Missouri . Forty years later Sam Clemens would be known to the world as Mark Twain and he would be living just miles away from where this book originated in Farmington Connecticut. It was then, while living on Farmington Avenue, that Mark Twain decided to write Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (and Huck would decide to go to hell and not turn in the runaway slave Jim ). Mark Twain's next door neighbor was none other than Harriet Beecher Stowe herself, author of Uncle Tom's Cabin. According to legend, when Abraham Lincoln met Harriet Beecher Stowe in 1862 he said, "So you're the little woman who wrote the book that started this Great War!" So it is very possible that this Anti-Slavery book was given to Mark Twain by Stowe . And it is easy to imagine the anti-Slavery conversations Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe must have had. This Anti-Slavery book could easily have had a substantial influence in Mark Twain's thoughts, most especially the idea to center his masterpiece Huck Finn around the evils of slavery. Are you beginning to see how amazingly historical this book is? Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is one of the most brilliant Anti-Slavery books ever written. This is the Anti-Slavery book kept by the author who would write the most famous American Anti-Slavery novel . A quintessential association item and a powerful symbol that refutes the ongoing debate that Mark Twain was a racist. Also included is the original 1911 auction catalog![ Clemens Samuel L. , " Mark Twain " ] Anti-Slavery. A series of seven various pamphlets bound together in full marbled calf from Mark Twain's personal library. 12mo (Various places, publishers, & dates, circa mid 1830’s). Front paste-down contains a pencil inscription in an unidentified hand, "Farmington Anti-Slavery Society no 9" below which is pasted the 1911 bookplate signed by Albert Bigelow Paine. It reads, "This volume is from the library of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain) signed ALBERT BIGELOW PAINE Literary Executor Sold February, 1911, by the Anderson Auction Company, no 12 E 46th Street New York." This was lot number 76 of the 1911 sale (see illustration of the original 1911 catalog description). Farmington Connecticut, the grand central station of the Underground Railroad , was home to the Farmington Anti-Slavery Society. A simple glimpse into this volume forces the reader to think about the inhumanity of slavery. No doubt this must have had at least some influence on Twain's thinking. This is an important piece of evidence Mark Twain was not a racist, and possibly contributed in some way to the construction of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Affixed to the front free end-paper is an original page of manuscript penned in ink by Mark Twain which reads:" I didn't get off entirelyclear of tax."PUTNAM'S CLERK----------------------------If I had [lived a right]taken care of myselfI would be twice as oldas I am now. The title page of the first pamphlet contains an ink inscription (in an unknown hand, but possibly by a founder of the Farmington Anti Slavery Society), "Farmington Anti-Slavery Society no 9." (a similar inscription in pencil is on the front paste-down). Here is a list of the contents in order of appearance:** Letter ( on Slavery ) of William E. Channing to J.G. Birney. Boston, James Munroe & Company 1837 . 36 pages.** Narrative of Amos Dresser with Stones Letters from Natchez & Two Letters Relating to the Treatment of Slaves . New York, American Anti-Slavery Society 1836. 42 pages including an illustration of brutality toward slaves.** Declaration of Sentiment and Constitution of the American Anti-Slavery Society. New York 1835. 16 pages.** Anti Slavery Catechism by Lydia Maria Child . Newburyport, 1836. 36 pages.** An Address to the Presbyterians of Kentucky Proposing a Plan for the Instruction & Emancipation of Their Slaves by a Committee of the Synod of Kentucky. Newburyport, Charles Whipple 1836. 36 pages.** The Abrogation of the 7th Amendment by the American Churches . New York, 1835. 23 pages, including an illustration of a slave whipping. Letter to Ministers & Elders in Kentucky on the Sin of Holding Slaves and the Duty of Immediate Emancipation by James G. Birney. New York, S.W. Benedict (1834?). 18 pages. The condition of the book is overall very good minus. There is very little edge wear to the attractive full marbled calf binding. The front cover and front end-paper are together, neatly detached from the rest, which is holding very tightly together. Some moderate foxing throughout most of the text. Housed in a custom made clamshell box. The original 1911 auction catalog is a rarity in itself, the wraps are detached and chipped, text bumped but largely very clean. All in all, Mark Twain kept this book until his death on April 21st, 1910. So we know it was important to him. All of the illustrations in this description come from the book and the original 1911 auction catalog of the estate of Samuel L. Clemens. This is an important African Americana item as well as a great literary association item. Please feel free to ask any questions. Have a great day! Forms of payment we accept are listed below. Thank you for your business! [Note: For more information please go to my "ME" link above] 25 years ago I was a beginner Mark Twain collector, who met up with some extraordinary stashes of Mark Twain memorabilia stemming from people who actually knew Mark Twain, including Cyril Clemens and Jervis Langdon Jr., whom I later had the honor of selling Mark Twain's actual marriage certificate (his Great Grandfather was the father of the bride who signed the document as a witness, and his grandfather was the brother of the bride), and still others who knew his only surviving daughter Clara. Along the path of collecting Mark Twain I found out that the beloved friend of Mark Twain's daughter Clara, Caroline Thomas Harnsberger, lived just a few short miles away from me. We soon became great friends and she helped me more than I can say here. Then in 1991 I became a full time Mark Twain dealer, and quit my "real job." This opened the door to making many friends with Mark Twain enthusiasts from almost every walk of life, and enabled me to acquire and even discover some of the highest quality Mark Twain memorabilia on the planet. Striving to provide the best possible service, my expertise in Mark Twain's handwriting enabled me to develop the world's best authenticity guarantee on handwritten material. Simply stated I personally guarantee all autograph items to be authentic for $1,000 above the purchase price, free of any time limit (other than my date with the Great Beyond). I would hope other sellers of autographs would emulate this policy of more than your money back regarding fake material, but so far as I know I am the only seller on Ebay or ANYWHERE ELSE that cares enough about the client to offer such a strong authenticity guaraneee. Should you want any more information, please e-mail us at nospambob@marktwaincollector.com (and be sure to not include that nospam at the beginning) or just use ebay's message system.
