First Edition. Complete set of parts bound together into one volume. The US Congressional hearings into the Titanic maritime disaster. Part of a unique and very scarce collection of Titanic and White Star Line books and other material several of which are listed separately for sale on this site. This particular volume is considered the Everest amongst Titanic collectors, and is extremely scarce in any condition, let alone such as this one. Full Spine and Title Details, gold blocked on black leather with raised bands: "TITANIC DISASTER, Hearing before Sub Committee, Report of Committee on Commerce, United States Senate, Speeches of Senator Smith and Senator Raynor" and gold blocked at base of spine is "THE ROYAL MAIL STEAM PACKET CO." The inscription (ink) on the fly-leaf reads: To The Royal Mail Steam Packet Company with Compliments and Thanks from Wardlaw Gates [?] R.N., Washington D.C. June 14th, 1912". The full Title Page reads: "Titanic Disaster, Hearing before a Subcommittee of the Committee on Commerce United States Senate, Sixty-Second Congress, Second Session, Pursuant to S.RES.283, Directing the Committee on Commerce to Investigate the Causes Leading to the Wreck of the White Star Liner 'Titanic'". The List of Witnesses overleaf reads: "Cottam, Harold Thomas; Crawford, Alfred; Ismay, J. Bruce; Lightoller, Charles Herbert; Marconi, Guglielmo; Rosron, Capt. Arthur Henry", this being Part I. In Part 2 the witnesses are "Bride, Harold, S; Cottam, Harold T. (recalled) and Pitman, Herbert Joh [sic]". Subsequent Parts and Sub-Sections contain many other witnesses giving testimony, including a great many well-known names of the day. The investigation by the US Senate was comprehensive and exhaustive, and every aspect of the disaster is documented in extraordinary detail. The text throughout the book is in excellent condition, whilst the leather covers are firm and intact, although a little bumped and rubbed at corners front and back and at spine edges. Front endpapers in formal floral design are complete, rear endpaper loose-leaf is missing, although the paste-down is present.
