Description
This rare, old folio was accepted for auction by Sotheby's Auction house in New York City in Dec. 2003 and was not sold at auction. This auction was for fine books and manuscripts. The folio had a pre-sale estimate from Sotheby's of $7000. Sotheby's required that any book or manuscript had a pre-sale estimate of at least $5000., or they would not accept it for auction. Several years ago, a similar, complete folio was known to be for sale by a European dealer for $10,000.-Complete sets of these plates rarely appear on the market. Here we have some photos of the folio and photos of the December 2003 Sotheby's catalog that it appeared in. There is a photo of the Sotheby's description, and we are going to use that in our description, in case you can not read it from the photo. Schinkel, Karl Friedrich Sammlung architektonisscher Entwurfe. Neue Ausgabe. Postdam: Ferdinand Riegel, 1841-1843 [-1845] Oblong folio [410 x 514 mm.] 174 plates by Ferdinand Berger, C.F. Thiele, W. Gruzmacher, W. Loeillet and others after Schinkel; some foxing, especially on plates 1, 67, 115, 137, 138, marginal soiling and fraying plates 19 and 71 shaved into caption. Original blind-stamped cloth portfolio, gold-ruled border and gold-stamped name "Schinkel" on upper cover ; worn, edges, and ties torn. Published originally in 28 parts between 1819 and 1840, this is the definitive edition, containing Schinkel's [1781-1841] designs for palaces, houses, churches, museums, government buildings, and memorials. This edition contains the entire complement of 174 plates, which are all described in the text section dated 1841-1845 ["supplement-blatter"]; complete sets of the plates rarely appear on the market. Schinkel was professor in the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, and his principal buildings are [or were] in that city and its invirons. We have had the cloth folio professionally restored at the suggestion of a Sotheby's representative. The exterior of the folio was cleaned and the interior folio paper lining was replaced with acid-free paper. Flaps were restored, and new ties were added. The new white ties can be removed, if desired. An unusual opportunity for you to aquire a museum piece at wholesale that will certainly only appreciate in value. Selling as is.
