Description
An opportunity to acquire this stunning edition of The Poetical Works of Percy Bysshe Shelley, one of 250 copies only in existence, as issued by The Kelmscott Press in 1895, by none other than William Morris. A most impressive and very beautiful complete three volume set in original limp vellum. All three volumes in superb condition - and remain uncut as issued - many photographs are below. A treasure edition - these books are finely bound and very finely printed as you are aware. One of the most impressive and ornate books of late 19th/early 20th Century Private Press. As you know, Kelmscott Chaucer remains one of the most important renowned revival works, Shelley's Poetical Works is a similarly acclaimed beautiful small edition ( 250 only...) from The Kelmscott Press, William Morris. BOOK: The Poetical Works of Percy Bysshe Shelley, printed by William Morris at The Kelmscott Press, Hammersmith, London, finished on the 21st day of August 1895. Original full gilt-stamped vellum binding with golden-green Japanese grosgrain ribbon, printed on thick handmade watermarked paper with deep black and red inks, top edge plain, other edges uncut. Profusely decorated inside. (With the books remains an interesting note in pencil on old laid paper stationary, dated 1898, describing the provenance, origins or occasion of gift-giving of the books...a gift from a woman to a man, referring to "Constantia. Singing....." - this pencil note is somewhat difficult to read.) BOOK CONDITION: Fine. Uncut. Please see photos. Vellum and ribbon slightly darkened and minutely soiled by age. Gilt I in the title on Vol.I very slightly rubbed. No inscriptions or bookplates. Slight age darkening to vellum and paper edges. Limp Yapp Vellum slightly warped. Title of Vol.I with a slight fold, not deep and may be original as happens in binding. Bright and clean inside without any evidence of handling, and clearly always treasured as a precious and valuable memento. Spotless - these books are now over 100 years old, and are in remarkable good and uncut condition. Good luck bidding! Enjoy your win!
