However, this time, my wife and I will have to deny ourselves the pleasure of being with you. The winter has been very strenuous for me, and aside from my regular work I have been trying, to the best of my ability, to contribute to the Defense effort. I am not the youngest, and my health is not the strongest, and I have therefore been advised by my doctor to avoid social obligations as much as possible. Thanking you again for your kindness, I am Sincerely yours, Thomas Mann (signature) The Nobel Prize winning German author, Thomas Mann, lived in Switzerland and then the United States after Hitler came into power. The book recreates a fictional reunion between Goethe and the object of his youthful passion, Charlotte Kestner.
