Images of well manicured lawns and shrubbery amongst well tended houses, apartment blocks, and chain stores with no people show both the "everytown" quality of this way of living as well as the blandness inherent in that universality. Homma has also photographed schoolchildren who live in these suburbs, showing them as dismissive or dispassionate themselves, a product of their environment. Tokyo Suburbia contains essays on these and other qualities of Homma's work by Momoyo Kaijima and Shinji Miyadai. The book was designed by Yasukazu Arai and edited by Naoya Sasaki and Kyoko Wada. Measuring 11.25 x 8.5 x 2 inches, Tokyo Suburbia is a thick, hardcover book of pictorial boards (no dust jacket as issued) with 60 color plates printed on thick card stock. Inlaid on the inside cover is a descriptive pamphlet (in English and Japanese) about the artist and the book. The book has been signed on the back page by Homma. Included with the book is a special limited edition portfolio (#18 of 30) of 15 original C-prints (paper = 11 x 14 inches; images = 10.5 x 13 inches), printed on Kodak Endura paper and featuring the artist's stamp, signature, and hand-drawn sun symbol on verso. Each print is enclosed within its own archival plastic sleeve; the whole group is laid into a specially designed white cloth-covered clamshell box. The title, artist name, and publisher (Gallery 360°) are stamped in black on the box top, which lifts off to reveal a title page on heavy stock paper and beneath that, an index of the included prints, with titles, dates, and thumbnail images.
