Ma io non appartengo alla razza persiana né a nessun’altra razza. Non sono un meticcio e, al contrario di tutti gli altri gatti del mondo, non ho neppure un nome. Meglio così, piuttosto che quei nomi idioti del tipo: Fuffi, Pallino o Ginger. Per il mio piccolo amico, Mustafà, ero semplicemente “il gatto del soldato”.     Io e Mustafà ci eravamo conosciuti a scuola. Suo padre lo accompagnava ogni giorno tenendolo per mano sino al cancello. Il padre di Mustafà, lungo e magro, portava sempre una giacca scura con le maniche troppo corte. Mustafà era minuto, di pelle olivastra, le manine gesticolanti, un tipetto tutto nervi e calzoncini corti. Entrava in classe con gli occhi neri che brillavano. Lì trovava i suoi compagni. I suoi prediletti erano Sultan, Mohammed, Kadim, Ismaeel, Alì. Quel giorno la maestra Shajida stava raccontando una storia straordinaria. L’ovale del suo volto da ragazzina era incorniciato dallo hijab. Nel silenzio dell’aula echeggiava la musica ininterrotta della sua voce. Tutti ascoltavano come se fosse la preghiera del venerdì".
