Description
Up for auction today is a little Southern Cookbook by Annie Dennis that was published in Atlanta Georgia.  The last copyright date is 1915, which follows another copyright date of 1903.  I find no copies of the orignal Annie Dennis Cook Book or this Revised Edition for sale on any USA booksite.  Apparently some of the major booksites had one at some prior time, but the copy is long gone. Written in the old "receipt" style, Ms. Dennis plows straight into canning--telling you how to make any kind of fruit preserves and jellys (and several kinds of fruit and berry wine)  Then she starts on canning vegetables--"straight up"--corn,tomatoes, beans- and moves on to every pickle known to man.  Then the chow-chow, Higdon Salad, Cabbage Chow-chow, Pepper Mango. And then the catsup:  walnut, red pepper--recipe 1&2 and of course tomato.   That's the first fifty pages. There's 274 pages of recipes, most pages with at least  3 recipes. Definitely a southern cookbook, based on cake recipes:  several fruitcakes, white fruitcakes, Lady's Cake, White Mountain Cake, Jam Cake, a couple of Pound Cakes.  Many more cake recipes for more standard cakes.  How to make sauages.  How to sugar-cure a ham, how to cure a Virginia Ham.  Game and Fowl Recipes, lots of chicken recipes, lots of beef recipes.  Loads of dessert recipes including donuts, cookies, puddings, mousse, fresh fruit, pies, custards and ice creams. A large section of chafing dishes; a small section on fritters.  This book covers about everything that can be cooked (though I did'nt see squirrel or alligator).  This cook book measure 51/2" by 71/2".  Not an expensive cookbook when printed, the binding is stapled, not sewn, and the first free endpaper and rear endpaper are missing and hinges are cracked. Spine cover is securely attached to binding and front and rear panels are firmly attached. There's a wonderful advertisement for Velva Syrup Georgia Cane flavor on the front pastedown, with 2 recipes: one for Boston Brown Bread and one for Ginger Bread Cake.  The rear pastedown has an advertisement for The Atlanta Milling Company--Home of the Famous Capitola Flour (now defunct).  The last page has an endorsement from Maude Andrews-Ohl, an author and newspaper correspondent for the Atlanta Consititution.  Several spots of discoloration on front and back, mild soiling to cover.  Scattered foxing to the interior, mild soiling to page edges.  I would say in Very Good Condition.  Sturdy. I will be happy to answer any questions. NO INTERNATIONAL SALES.  I carefully package and add confirmation to each shipment.  Insurance is optional. My return policy is stated below. I accept checks (which must clear my bank before shipping--allow 10 days) and money orders but prefer Paypal.  Book will be mailed the day after payment is made.
