This is the copy of the New Testament carried by CSA President Jefferson Davis during the Civil War. It is in remarkable condition, leather bound, and completely readable except for the inscription wherein Mrs. Jefferson Davis presented it to my great-great grandfather for services rendered during the transport of the Davis family to Fort Monroe after his capture and surrender. The inscription reads: Presented to Captain Enoch Mooer by Mrs. Jefferson Davis in token of esteem." There is at least one historical picture showing "President" Davis disembarking from the "William P. Clyde" (Enoch Moore's ship. "Shortly after the ship reached Fortress Monroe and while they were waiting for landing instructions, the discovery was made that Mrs. Davis's trunk in the hold had been broken open. The sailors had looted it for souveniers and when she complained to the Captain, he took steps to have everything returned before anyone could have shore leave. Everything was found but for a family album containing many photographs of the family and friends. The ship was searched from stem to stern but it could not be found. The reason was that it had been hidden by the young purser (son David Moore) who secreted it in the Captain's cabin. The album was smuggled ashore but later returned to the eldest daughter of Jefferson Davis. The daughter had also requested the return of the "Jefferson Davis pocket Testament which he had carried all during the war. My great-grandmother showed her the inscription, refused to return it, but returned the stolen album.   Place a Bid!
