"WAVE MUSIC" – SIGNED/NUMBERED Limited Edition with Print Photography by Clifford Ross Aperture, NY, 2005 Limited to 75 copies, With Signed and Numbered Photogravure Print, Presented in a Clamshell Box Clifford Ross’ Wave Music is an homage to the beauty and simplicity of the surf as much as it is to the beauty of black-and-white photographs and the process of creating them. From the publisher: “Wave Music opens with explosive images of stormy seas and skies—photographs taken on the edge of hurricanes. This series presents gorgeous, formalist slices of nature at her most tempestuous and romantic. The ‘Hurricane’ series is followed by ‘Horizons,’ classically composed images of sky and quiet surf, and finally, by images of pure photographic grain. The ‘Grain’ pictures are pure abstractions—tonal fields of gray. Each ‘Grain’ image echoes the tones seen in the previous two series and addresses the very stuff of black and white photography itself. In Wave Music, Clifford Ross provides an incredible, heuristic journey, from the ecstatic formalism of ocean waves to the abstract sublime of pure light. Underlying each of the series and providing a unifying thread, are shifting elements of gesture, composition, and tone.” The book features an essay by Arthur Danto and an interview with Ross by A.M. Homes. Wave Music is a hardcover book, measuring 11.25 x 14.25 inches, with gray cloth-covered boards with title stamped in gray ribbon on the cover and spine. It contains 66 tri-tone plates in 148 pages. This special edition, limited to 75 copies, of which this copy is numbered 39, also includes an original photogravure print on handmade paper. The print, “Hurricane 1, 2000-2002,” is signed and numbered by Clifford Ross on the lower front edge. The print, enclosed in a folder, measures 8.5 x 10.5 inches on 11 x 14 inch paper. Both print and book fit into a gray cloth-covered clamshell box with the title stamped on the spine.
